As many of you X-men fans already know, X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to hit theaters on May 23rd, but we've been hearing a lot of buzz recently about Bryan Singers follow up to that movie, X-Men: Apocalypse which is set to release in 2016. Of course, we already know that Singer and producer & writer Simon Kinberg and X2 writers, Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, are currently in development on Apocalypse. And without giving too much away, Singer told Entertainment Weekly that the follow-up will be loosely based on the classic 1990 comic storyline of "Age of Apocalypse" which fans may know presented an alternative universe and of course featured the ancient villain, Apocalypse. But the big question that X-Men fans want to know is how much of the comic's storyline will be explored in the new movie? Well, Singer says that he's playing with some of the source material right now and that there may be some "swapping" going on, but that Apocalypse will not necessarily create that alternate universe that fanboys are familiar with from the comics. And if that bums you out a little bit, it may be good for fans to know that as it stands right now the plans for Apocalypse are apparently huge. Simon Kinberg mentioned that visually speaking, Apocalypse could actually be a bigger film that Days of Future Past And speaking of, if you're curious about how Days of Future Past's will segue into Apocalypse? Singer says that "You won't feel at the end of the movie that it set up Apocalypse," however he did say that Days of Future Past will give some storyline clues for the follow up movie saying, "...It sets up possibilities. What we'll discover in Apocalypse is that events in this movie made that happen." Singer mentioned that ancient mutancy will be at the core of Apocalypse's story, answering questions like "What would humans have thought mutants were? What would mutants think humans were? You're dealing with gods and things like that and what if one survived and what if that found its way into our world?" But we also want to know which mutants will be front and center? Well, based on their contracts from First Class, James McAvoy will be returning as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender will be back to play Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence will suit up once again as Mystique, and Nicholas Hoult will return as Beast. Singer also said that he would like to bring in some other classic mutants like Gambit and Nightcrawler into the mix and that he is very excited about introducing some familiar characters at different ages to quote "explore the 80's" X-Men: Age of Apocalypse has been scheduled for a May 27, 2016 release. Now just yesterday, we also heard that a couple of X-Men mutants may be getting their own standalone films, and to get more info on that, click right here.
